Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin custom-crafted shells of porcelain that bond to your natural teeth. They provide a safe and effective way to improve the appearance of your smile without the need for more complex procedures.

It’s possible to get a single veneer, but the team at Wine Country Aesthetic Dentistry typically recommends getting between six and eight. A full row of veneers allows for a more balanced and symmetrical smile.

What issues can veneers help correct?

The team at Wine Country Aesthetic Dentistry uses veneers to correct minor cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Broken or chipped teeth
  • Pointy or unusually shaped teeth
  • Smaller-than-average teeth
  • Visible gaps or spaces

You might also benefit from veneers if you have yellow or discolored teeth that don’t respond to in-office or take-home teeth whitening treatment.

What does getting veneers involve?

At Wine Country Aesthetic Dentistry, getting veneers takes at least two appointments spaced several weeks apart.

At your first appointment, the team conducts an oral exam and asks about your goals. Then, they take oral X-rays to assess your teeth and gums. If you have crooked or misaligned teeth or gum disease, prerequisite treatments like braces or periodontics may be necessary.

If your teeth and gums appear healthy, the team administers a local anesthetic - they may also use sedation dentistry - and prepares your teeth by removing a thin layer of enamel about one millimeter thick. Next, they take digital impressions of your teeth and send them to a laboratory that manufactures a set of custom veneers.

Several weeks later, you return to the office. The team once again administers a local anesthetic, lines up the veneers with your teeth, and bonds them in place. Then, they trim off any excess material, polish the veneers, and provide you with aftercare instructions.

How long do veneers last?

Veneers last an average of 12-15 years, but you can extend their lifespan with good oral hygiene. The team at Wine Country Aesthetic Dentistry recommends brushing and flossing daily and visiting the office at least twice a year for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.

To prevent damage to your veneers, avoid bad habits like nail-biting and opening objects with your teeth. If you grind your teeth or play contact sports, consider wearing a night guard or mouthguard.
